Kaija Karri has been doing birch bark goods all her long life. She learned the techniques as a child by watching the talented village people making their creations – weaved birch bark items have been part of Finland’s hand craft traditions since ages. However, the younger generation is not so interested in keeping up this tradition.

The bark, skin, can be peeled off a tree only around midsummer. Without its skin, the tree will die. That is why only skin of trees that will be cut down later that year is used for birch bark items.
